Been saying this and things like this for years.
If someone is only offering exposure as payment, you need to understand a few things:
1. If ‘exposure’ is payment, then you are similarly paying them with ‘exposure’ when you give them your work for free. The result is they should owe you for the work you do and helping expose their brand.
2. The client is offering nothing you cannot do on your own. If the work is good, it will find its audience eventually, so their promotional apparatus is irrelevant.
3. They are inherently an unprofessional client and thus cannot be expected to follow-through on any promise. Professional clients do not as for free work.
